Study overview

The spacing effect is one of the more reliable findings in learning research: the same number of study or practice trials tends to produce better retention when they are spread out than when they are massed into one block. Cepeda et al. synthesized a large verbal-learning literature. Lee and Genovese reviewed the messier motor-skill version of the same question.

Methodology summary

Cepeda et al. is a quantitative review, not a guitar experiment. Lee and Genovese examined motor-learning studies that compared massed versus distributed physical practice. Tasks, rest intervals, and skill types vary widely. None of the cited work measured alternate picking or palm muting.

Key findings

Limitations

These papers do not validate a specific 4-BPM ladder or a one-bar loop. Fatigue, injury risk, and motivation are not fully captured by lab tasks. A three-hour Saturday that includes real rest between items is not the same thing as mindless massing—but it is still a weak substitute for showing up most days.

Practical meaning

Interpretation, not a finding: treat a picking fragment as a skill that should be visited often in short, accurate blocks. That is why the 1-bar metronome protocol ends the item while form still holds, and why practice frequency favors most days over one heroic weekend. Pair with the earlier deliberate practice summary (what to do in the block) rather than treating either paper as a complete method.
