Palm muting

Definition

A technique where the side of the picking hand rests on the strings near the bridge to damp sustain.

Why it matters

It turns high-gain notes into rhythmic, percussive hits instead of a wash of distortion.

Examples

Open-string chugs; muted power-chord gallops; transitions into unmuted chord stabs.
