What is drop tuning?
Definition
Drop tuning means lowering only the lowest string of the guitar by a whole step, while the other strings keep their normal relationship. Drop D is the classic example: E A D G B E becomes D A D G B E.
Why metal players use it
With the low string dropped, a power chord on the bottom two or three strings is just one finger across one fret. That makes fast, heavy riffs much easier, and it gives you a lower open note to chug on.
Common drop tunings
- Drop D: D A D G B E
- Drop C#: C# G# C# F# A# D#
- Drop C: C G C F A D
- Drop B: B F# B E G# C#
- Drop A (7-string): A E A D G B E
