Alternate picking

Definition

A picking pattern in which consecutive notes are played with opposite pick directions (down, up, down, up).

Why it matters

Even 16th-note metal lines depend on matching volume and duration between downstrokes and upstrokes.

Examples

Single-string 16ths at moderate tempo; two-note-per-string scale sequences; many palm-muted riffs that are not pure downpicking.
